‘Gram Beaute’ is a hair salon located on the second floor of a commercial building in the centre of Osaka. Whilst interested in the design challenges offered by interior projects, their somewhat short life-span is concerning. Durability and functionality are often overridden by a preoccupation with fashion. We wanted here to create a design which will endure, adapting to future changes in ownership and function, and an extension of the work undertaken in the ‘VAJRA forest’ project.
The store plan form is long and slender with a width of 4.2m, length of 20.8m and height of 2.9m. In designing the space the fixed elements were arranged first, including the shampoo booth, mirrors etc and movable objects arranged lastly. A grid of rails is fixed to the ceiling and allow the various elements to be repositioned infinitely. Shelving, mirrors and partition walls are all hung from this grid and can be arranged in the desired way. Rails fixed to the walls allow also allow for further flexibility in the placement of shelving and mirrors.
The store space maintains a freshness through the constantly varying and easily facilitated arrangement of interior elements.
